Salter Cousins Panel, 2017

At the conclusion of the 2017 Salter Family Gathering, a panel was held featuring the five surviving cousins descended from Marion C. and Bessie S. Salter of Gum Branch, Georgia.

The panel concluded the 2017 gathering, held November 11, 2017 at Oatland Island Wildlife Center, at the Price-Delk-Dawson cabin, which was the residence for Marion and Bessie Salter.

Participating in the panel were Dale Smith, Myrtice Edwards, Velma Dukes, Russell Wells, and Leo Wells.

Planning 2018

Just a quick note about the 2018 event...

We hope to soon decide on a date and location for next year's Salter Family Gathering. The general feeling is something more like those in the past, where we meet at a restaurant, as opposed to this year's special gathering at the cabin.

Let us know what you prefer. The weekend nearest Dale Smith's birthday in 2018 is November 10 & 11 (Saturday & Sunday).

Let us know your thoughts on when and where to have the 2018 event, either in the comments here, or if you have a private question or concern, use the Contact Page.

Edit: About 2017...

We are still compiling the photos and videos from the 2017 event, and will post as we're able. If you have any you'd like to share, use the Facebook Group page.

Important Directions Information

While the event is being held at Oatland Island Wildlife Center, do not go into the main entrance. Rather, just past the entrance, on the left, is a secondary gate that will be open exclusively for us.

The main gate is for regular visitors, and charges $5/person to enter. Our fee for the gathering has been paid, but we must use the special entrance.

Signs will posted at the main entrance, directing "Salter" straight ahead, and at the alternate entrance, directing "Salter" to enter.

Plan to arrive by 11:00.

Almost time!

Alright everyone! It is almost time! This Saturday is the day of our Salter Family Gathering. Please arrive around 11:00 am so we may get set up for lunch.

It is an old fashioned potluck so bring your favorite foods to share. Also bring whatever drinks (non-alcoholic) you might like. Plates, cups, utensils and napkins will be provided.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes as it is at Granny and Pa's old log cabin set at a very woodsy wildlife center. Picnic tables are there, but extra lawn chairs would be good. I have cornhole and a few games available, but anyone with horseshoes or anything else, please bring them.

We have gathered some old photos and Richard Jones has worked with others to put them in an enjoyable form to which we can all have access. If you have questions, please let Lee or David know. Can't wait to see you all!!!

Nearly 60 years apart

Here's a picture from a family gathering at the cabin in Gum Branch. This is from the late 1940s.

Salter family at the cabin.
Top row (L-R): Theodore Wells, David E Wells, Bessie Salter, Marion C Salter.
Middle row (L-R): Hubert Smith, Eva Salter Smith, Willie Lee Salter Wells, Leona Salter Wells, Gene Wells.
Bottom row (L-R): Velma Wells, Myrtice Wells, Russell Wells, Leo Wells, Louis Smith, Dale Smith.

In 2005, Leona Salter Wells made a trip to Oatland Island Wildlife Center to see the cabin.

That was for her 92nd birthday. She had a wonderful time.

Map to Oatland Island Wildlife Center

The Oatland Island Wildlife Center was chosen as the site of the 2017 Salter Family Gathering for one simple reason: They have Ma & Pa Salter's house.

The Center has taken excellent care of the cabin and restored it to the condition it was prior to Ma & Pa Salter moving in.

Here are direction to Oatland Island Wildlife Center.

This map is to the main entrance. We will likely be directed to an alternate entrance that is around 50 yards past the turn in on Barley Drive from Sandtown Road.

Preview of the location

Scoping out the cabin ahead of time.

8 picnic tables, seating 10 each (5 per bench) means seating for 80, which should be more than enough. If as many as 50 show up, that still leaves 3 tables for food. Again, more than enough.

There is an electrical connection (2 outlets with two electric jacks each). That should be quite handy. However, if we could be self-reliant regarding keeping food warm (if possible) that would be even better.

In the video I said each table seats 8. Each seats 10, as the post above says.

There is also an alternate access road that will be open for the family on the day of the gathering. It should allow adequate parking.

If there are any questions or concerns, let us know.

Pictures Wanted

If you have pictures to share at the event, you can upload them at this link: http://bit.ly/SalterPix

We are looking for pictures from the time at the cabin (c1933-1967), at previous gatherings (formerly birthday event for Grandma Leona Wells and Myrtice Wells Edwards), or other pictures of family events. Of particular note might be pictures of family members who are no longer with us.

If you don't know how to scan pictures, contact Lee Wells Steele [Lee's page on Facebook] or David B Dukes [David's page on Facebook], or leave a message here. We can take them and make high quality copies, or we can make good copies without the picture leaving your possession, if you prefer. We understand how precious they are.

You can also post the images on Facebook, if that is your preference. Leave them in the comments on a post there, or share them to the main page. All photos are appreciated.

The Cabin

Some of you are old enough to remember the cabin. Folowing Pa Salter's death in 1967, the cabin was sold to the state of Georgia and moved to Oatland Island Wildlife Center, where it is used today in exhibits and events.

But do you know the whole history?

The cabin was built by Lewis Price, who was brother of Vincey Price.

Vincey was an ancestor of many of us. She was married to William Wells, and was mother of Evan Wells.

Evan's children included William Solomon Wells and David Francis Wells.

William Solomon Wells was grandfather of Theodore Russell Wells, who married Willie Lee Salter.

David Francis Wells was father to David Evan Wells, who married Leona Salter.

We have a family connection to not only the last residents of the cabin, but the first residents as well.
